How to Fix the Water Sloshing Sound in Toyota Fortuner Doors

Assalamu Alaikum, readers of The Auto Pulse! If you own a Toyota Fortuner, Hilux Revo, or Prado, you might have heard a strange "sloshing" sound coming from the doors when you brake or accelerate.

This sound is actually rainwater trapped inside the door panel. The factory rubber plugs at the bottom of the door are designed to let water out, but they often get clogged or seal themselves shut. If left untreated, this can cause rust, mold, and damage to your door speakers and window motors.

In this DIY guide, I will show you a 2-minute fix to drain the water and modify the plugs so it never happens again. Watch the full procedure below.

1. Confirming the Water Buildup

First, identify which door is holding water. Open the door and swing it back and forth gently. If you hear water splashing inside, you need to drain it immediately.

⚠️ Warning: Water enters the door naturally past the window seals during rain or car washes. The problem is not the leak, but the drainage.

2. Locating & Removing the Plugs

Look underneath the bottom edge of the door. You will see small black rubber plugs (usually 2 or 3 per door). These act as dust covers but often seal too tightly against the metal.

Use a small flathead screwdriver or your fingernails to pull the plugs out. Be careful: A large amount of water may gush out immediately!

3. Modifying the Plugs (Permanent Fix)

You shouldn't leave the holes open, as dust and insects can get in. Instead, we will modify the rubber plugs to allow water to flow freely.

The Trick: Take a pair of Wire Cutters or scissors and snip off the "closed" tip of the rubber plug. This creates a permanent opening while keeping the dust cover intact.

4. Reinstallation & Verification

Push the modified plugs back into the holes. Now, whenever water enters the door, it will immediately drain out through your new cut-out, preventing rust and the annoying sloshing sound.

This simple 5-minute fix works on almost all Toyota SUVs including the Land Cruiser, Prado, and Fortuner.
